Coming to Dublin, Ireland ?
Me and My brother are second generation born in USA our Grandparents came over from Dublin and our family have been there as long as my grandparents can remember his g-g-grandfather was from Dublin. any ways we have been saving money for about 3 years to come to where our family called home before America. We both wanted to do our own research with out having to go to tourist websites so here i am hoping people who actually call Ireland or specifically Dublin read this post we would like to know…..
Whats a cheap hotel we can stay at that is clean and has a bed and toilet? We don’t need anything special cause we won’t be in our rooms alot except to sleep then its out to learn and explore again.
We also would like to know if there are any good Fishing spots in or around Dublin.
Where are the good ole’ traditional Pubs located that our grandfather may have had a drink at. If there aren’t any then where are some good Pubs or bars Located.
We also would like to know from locals any good, Theatre’s, Dance Halls, and Musuems.
We would like to know where some good home style restraunts are located so that we can get some traditional Irish and or Gaelic Cooking. ( Sorry if they are the same thing i didnt know )
Last but not least we would like to know where we can listen to some live Irish Music.
Any info would be of great help… Like i said I want to wait till the last minute to go get a book or look at a tourist website cause we would like to get info from True Locals….
We will post again soon when we get there and possibly if anybody would like to explore Ireland with two American Visiting there Roots then we can exchange info and hang out….
Thank you and can’t Wait…

dont know sorry thogh
Hi I travel to Dublin at least 3-4 times a year and love the place, Im planning to go live there next year. Ive made many friends over the 10 years Ive been going and the place is vibrant.
I usually stay in temple bar have done the basic hostels to the posh hotels 1 of my favourite 1s is Oliver st John Gogartys hostel (18-21 Anglesea Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2). its basic but clean with the option of a twin room (bunk-beds) private bathroom or up to a 12 bed dormitory if u can cope! they have 24hr manned desk and a good breakfast if you dont want to go out. If you’d rather go a little posher then the temple bar hotel is lovely offers more privacy but not the same opportunity to sit chatting with like minded travellers.
I have picked out my favourie eating places over the years and Gallaghers boxty house on fleet st temple bar is superb whether it be breakfast with a bloody mary or a later evening meal 10/10 love it! Oliver st john gogartys have a great restaraunt and a floor with lively Irish music and downstairs standard pub music gets packed out.
As for traditional music well were do you start-with gorgartys above or The Aud Dubliner (my local when over there) which does great bar food, then if you go a litle further out of temple bar the Brazen head pub is the oldest pub with great food and music-you really cant go wrong in Dublin any1 will suggest places for you to try.
My favourite museum is Kilmainham Goal (Prison) built in the 1790′s by the English to hold and torture the Irish people that they thought of as less than human. They put Men, Women and Children in this prison.
Ive put a couple of you-tube links on and they give you an inside view (jail brazen head)
Hope this helps and if you want any more info just let me know, cant help with the fishing not my thing-hope you have a great time regards Jo
That’s nice that you have Irish blood in your family, but then so do many tourists that come here – I’m afraid we hear it so often that we really don’t care.
A useful website is, and there is also. You can also invest in a DK Eyewitness Guide to Ireland. Accommodation can be got via – read reviews before booking. You not likely to get a cheap hotel in Dublin city centre with all the facilities you want, but if you go a short distance outside the centre, you will have some luck.
I know nothing about fishing spots, but I wouldn’t eat any fish that come out of Dublin bay. Ever heard of Sellafield?
There are very few traditional pubs left in Dublin city centre, unfortunately. Anything that’s there is tarted up for the tourist market, you won’t find any old men in tweed caps anywhere in Temple Bar – it’s a young person’s hangout (with ridiculous prices). Head out of Dublin for this, there are still several traditional pubs in Limerick city, a good one is Nancy Blake’s on Denmark Street, and Dolan’s Pub on the Dock Road is another – but this is verging on superpub territory and you can also see gigs there. Nancy’s and Dolan’s also do trad. Temple Bar in Dublin also has some trad, Gogarty’s used to do it upstairs. I would suggest looking on a Dublin tourist website for a little outside of the centre that do trad nights, I know that there used to be trad nights in Slattery’s in Rathmines.
Dance Halls? They’re long gone …. I do remember the Olympic Ballroom, but I doubt anyone else does. However, you can go to the Gaiety Theatre on a weekend night, pay about 15 Euro to get in and it’s a huge complex with 3 or 4 different dance areas with different types of music and live shoes, plus a chillout area. It’s great fun, dress nice for it.
The True Locals in Dublin are now Polish, Czech, and other nationalities …. Ireland has changed a lot since your granddaddy left. Be prepared for this.
The cheapest that are clean are hostels (honestly)
Good fishing spots I know theres some in Skerries Co. Dublin and Rush Co. Dublin but that where my knowledge on that subject ends.
Well there’s thousand’s that your grandfather’s might have had a drink in so if you want an answer to that you’ll have to be more specific.
You can go into any pub at lunch or dinner time to get good old Irish food.
You can listen to Irish music in most pubs usually on a weekday there”ll be a sign outside or on a window to let you know if theres something like that on.
And last but not least you are a pair of idiots you’ve asked all these questions without saying were your going or the area you want to find out about, Dublin is bigger then two fields you know and everyone doesn’t know everyone so if you think just because you happen to mention that your coming back to trace your roots that were all going to know who your grandfather is your gravely mistaken.
So if your expecting to walk into the nearest pub and say where John’s great great grandsons and everyone to know who you are your in for an awful culture shock
